Firefox Rolls Out iPhone Ad Blocking While Mozilla Still Shows Its Own Ads

Firefox started a slow rollout of baked-in ad blocking for iPhone users on September 1, 2026. The feature is off by default. It helps people using Firefox on iOS bypass ads on websites, while Mozilla still makes money showing its own ads.

That is not a footnote. That is the product. Mozilla will help you skip the ads that pay for the pages you read. It will keep the ads that pay for Firefox.

What Firefox put on iPhone

This blocking is built into Firefox on iOS. Mozilla is not flipping it on for everybody at once. The company is rolling it out slowly.

It is off by default. Leave it alone and nothing changes. Turn it on and Firefox starts blocking ads on websites you open in that app.

This lives inside Firefox only. It does not change Safari. It does not change the rest of your iPhone.

Mozilla blocks their ads and keeps its own

The story is sitting right in the open. Firefox helps iPhone users bypass ads on websites. Firefox also makes money showing its own ads.

I have watched this pattern for years. A browser wraps itself in privacy talk, then protects the one ad pipe that funds the shop. Regular people hear ad blocking and think the noise is gone. It is not gone. It just got a new landlord.

Plenty of small sites still run on display ads. When a browser strips those and then serves its own, that browser is not doing you a favor out of kindness. It is choosing who gets to talk to you.

What this means on your iPhone

  • You have to turn the blocking on. It will not enable itself.
  • It only works in Firefox on iOS, not across every app on the phone.
  • Website ads can get blocked. Mozilla’s own ads are still part of how Firefox makes money.
  • A slow rollout means your copy of Firefox may not have the feature yet.

If you run a small site that depends on ads, this is another cut. The visitor can still see advertising. You just are not the one getting paid.

Plain advice

Use it if website clutter drives you crazy and Firefox is already your iPhone browser. Just do not confuse blocking someone else’s ads with living in an ad-free world.

If you care about a site you read, remember it does not get paid when Firefox kills its banners and keeps Mozilla’s. A privacy feature can be useful and still be a business. Both can be true.

You are not getting a free ride. You are getting a different billboard.
